The history of chocolate begins in Mesoamerica, where the Olmec (1500-400 BC) discovered cacao and consumed it as a drink by adding water and spices to the ground cacao beans.
Cacao soon became a staple in the diets of the Mayans and Aztecs, where it was used as currency as well as a unit of measurement. Often cacao was presented as an offering to the gods during religious ceremonies.
The first chocolate to appear was in the sixteenth century when cacao was brought to Europe, and mixed with sugar and vanilla or cinnamon. Chocolate soon became a delicacy enjoyed by the royal courts. It was in England during the nineteenth century that the first commercial chocolates were created by mixing cocoa powder, cocoa butter and sugar.
