Cold-buster spicy chai

Sore throat, runny nose, fatigue? With this recipe, the signs and symptoms of cold season are no match for you. The fresh turmeric, ginger, spices and lemon juice in this recipe will boost your immune system and help you fight viruses naturally. You can try making an extra large batch of this tea, letting the ingredients infuse while it simmers, and keep it in a large mason jar in the fridge to keep your immune system working like a fine-tuned machine all week. Just reheat it, add a squeeze of lemon and enjoy!

How it's made


  • 1 piece of fresh ginger, about 2", cut into slices
  • 1/4 teaspoon of ground turmeric (or a teaspoon of fresh grated turmeric)
  • 2 cloves
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 3 to 4 grains of whole black pepper
  • 4 capsules of cardamom (crush the pods to liberate the tiny seeds)
  • 2 star anise
  • 2 teaspoons of black tea, like English Breakfast, or Elderflower
  • 2 cups of water
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon, or more if desired
  • 1 drizzle of maple syrup if desired


  1. Put all the ingredients in a large saucepan except for the lemon juice and maple syrup.
  2. Bring to a boil for 30 seconds, then turn down the heat and let simmer for 15 minutes.
  3. Strain out the whole spices, add the lemon juice and the maple syrup if desired.
