Chocolate coconut milk panna cotta with berries

The name panna cotta literally translates to 'cooked cream', and it's the name of a classic Italian dessert originally from the Piedmont region of Italy. It's fresh, simple, and always a crowd pleaser. And making a vegan version is a breeze! Simple replace the cow's milk and gelatin with creamy, flavourful coconut milk and the magic ingredient that gives it it's amazing texture: agar agar! Agar agar is a vegetarian binding and gelling agent derived from red algae, and an excellent substitute for gelatin. It comes in powdered or flake form, is tasteless and colourless, and a little goes a long way! There's a variety of recipes in which agar agar can be used, from jellies and jams to flan and other desserts. All you need to do is boil whatever it's mixed into, and plan for a few hours of cooling time, and voila! An easy solution that vegan dreams are made of. Whether you garnish it with berries, dried coconut or a drizzle of maple syrup, making this vegan panna cotta is a must!

How it's made


  • 2 1/4 cups of coconut milk
  • 1/3 cup of cane sugar
  • 1/4 cup of
  • a pinch of sea salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons of powdered agar agar
  • Berries for topping


  1. In a saucepan, mix all the ingredients except for the agar agar, and heat for several minutes until the sugar dissolves. Add the agar agar and bring to a boil.
  2. Pour the mix into ramekins and refrigerate for at least 3 hours.
  3. Top with berries and serve.
