Chili Con Chocolate

A heartwarming mix of beans and dark chocolate combined together to make a vegan chili. This recipe was inspired by that found in the Green Kitchen Story.

How It's Made


  • One yellow onion
  • Two garlic cloves
  • 2 tablespoons of coconut oil
  • 2 teaspoons of ground cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon of chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon of paprika
  • 1 teaspoon of oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon of tomato paste
  • 1 yellow bell pepper
  • 2 carrots
  • 1 cup whole kernel corn
  • 2 sticks of celery
  • 1 1/2 cups of mixed dried beans
  • 3 cups of crushed tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup of Chocolate Chunks 70% Cacao
  • 1 cup vegetable broth
  • 2 pinches of sea salt
  • pepper to taste
  • A handful of fresh cilantro


  1. Soak the dried beans in a large bowl of water for 24 hours.
  2. Drain and rinse the beans, then place in a pot, full generously with water and bring to a boil.
  3. Cook for 30 to 45 minutes, until tender but not soft.
  4. Finely chop the onions and garlic. Dice the vegetables.
  5. Heat the oil in a large pot, add the onion, garlic, cumin, paprika, oregano, cinnamon and chili powder.
  6. Cook for several minutes, until the onions and peppers are well covered in spices. Add the tomato paste and stir some more.
  7. Add the pepper, carrots, celery, corn kernels and cook for another 5 minutes.
  8. Add the crushed tomatoes, the cooked beans, vegetable broth and salt. Bring to a boil then reduce to medium-low heat and cook for an additional 20 minutes.
  9. Gently stir in the chocolate, a mix lightly. Adjust seasoning to taste and serve in a large bowl garnished with fresh coriander.
Serve with brown rice or quinoa.
