Season Survival Guide

With the gift of season change not only come knits, socks and shorter days but an inevitable need to readjust. Less moisture in the air means skin is flakier, hair more brittle, and heels a little rougher.  Survive the cold weather woes with naturally invigorating ingredients from your spice rack and boost your mood with a little self-love. Use organic, GMO-free, dry spices like, ginger, mustard and nutmeg for their ancient medicinal properties. From the soles of your feet up to your hair follicles try these comfort recipes during this shift.


Hair - Chia Seed Hair Mask

So your hair is a little lackluster since your summer days, luckily a magical protein-rich seed can bring it back. The chia seed is full of nourishing Omega-3 fatty acids, Zinc (for shine), Copper (for hair growth) and Iron (which transports oxygen to the scalp) and creates a jelly substance when mixed with a liquid. Add it to hair strengthening almond milk rich in antioxidants, magnesium and Vitamin E.

  • 1 tsp. Chia Seed
  • ¼ Cup of Almond Milk (or Coconut Milk)

How: Soak 1 tsp. of chia seeds in 1/4 cup of almond milk or coconut milk. Let sit for ten minutes. Once it forms a gel, apply it onto the scalp and leave it on for ten minutes. Wash off.


Lips – Coconut Palm Sugar + Oil

Lip scrub

Soft luscious lips are easy to maintain with a sweet lip scrub. Gently exfoliate flaky lips once or twice weekly for a healthy pout.  Some customizable options are mood elevating cocoa powder or plumping peppermint oil.

  • 1 tsp. Coconut Palm Sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. oil (olive, almond or coconut)

How: Add sugar to oil and mix until desired consistency. Apply scrub to lips in small, circular motions for 1-2 minutes and rinse off with a warm washcloth or lick it up. 


Face – Hemp Mask

Not only is hemp seed a superfood teeming with omega-6 and omega-3 essential fatty, vitamin D, it is also antibacterial, antioxidant and non- comedogenic. As if that isn’t impressive enough, it nourishes and protects the skin and helps with elasticity. Add it to antioxidant maple syrup which lowers redness, blemishes and dryness and your face will be nothing short of smooth and radiant.

Apply mask to clean, damp face. Let mask sit for 10 minutes. To use as an exfoliant, use your fingertips to massage your face in a circular motion. Can be stored in the fridge for up to two weeks.

  •  ¼ cup hemp seeds
  •  ¼ cup pure maple syrup
  •  1 tsp. nutmeg 

How: Add all ingredients in a food processor until hemp seeds are finely ground and paste has reached a smooth consistency.


Feet – Mustard Ginger Detoxifier

Let’s face it, the early setting sun can leave you feeling sluggish. Mustard and ginger foot soaks are not only detoxifying and stress relieving but also stimulate circulation for a relaxing, warming feeling. Ginger has been long known for its medicinal use, namely its cold and flu relieving properties and mustard for its diaphoretic qualities. Sweat out those toxins! Do it before bed and allow yourself at least an hour of sweat time, you’ll wake up feeling cleansed and refreshed.

  • 1 tsp. mustard powder
  • 1 tsp. ginger powder
  • Touch of cinnamon

How: Add your dry ingredients to warm water; let your feet soak for 15-20 minutes.


Home – Orange Pot Simmer

So you’ve shown some needed TLC to your body parts, it’s time to revitalize your senses with a delicious smelling space. This season brings oranges a plenty. Don’t just toss the peels! This citrus scent is lung cleansing, offers a natural energy lift and when boiled will permeate your home and works as a humidifier.

  • Orange Rind
  • Cinnamon
  • Vanilla
  • Cloves

How: Fill a small saucepan with water, add all ingredients and bring to a boil, then turn the heat down to simmer. Keep an eye on it to add water when needed. Refrigerate the recipe and reuse for up to one week.


Drink – Sacred Hot Chocolate

Now that you’re all primped up, reward yourself with an indulgence from the Gods. Cacao flavanols lower blood pressure and increase blood flow to the brain and heart. This sacred cup of hot chocolate is nutrient-rich, mineral-rich and immune boosting.  Add aphrodisiacal maca powder, calcium and fiber-rich carob powder, and iron-rich “Gold of the Gods”, lucuma powder for sweetness. Add the mix to cashew milk or almond milk and reap the benefits. Who says chocolate isn’t centering?

  • 6 tbsp. cacao powder
  • 2 tbsp. lucuma powder
  • 2 tbsp. carob powder
  • 2 tsp. maca powder
  • 1/2 tsp. pure ground vanilla powder
  • 1/4 tsp. Himalayan pink salt

How: Add one tbsp. of hot chocolate mix to one cup of milk of choice in a saucepan, gently warm.
