Five Oils to Keep Your Family Healthy This Fall
The days are shorter, the weather is cooler, and the kids are back in school. Fall is a wonderful time to take in all the beauty nature has to offer. It is also a great time to get sick. The combination of the change in the weather with the children coming into contact with more germ carrying classmates make fall a prime time sicknesses that quickly spread across the entire family. Here are five essential oils that will help keep you and your family healthy.
Lavender is one of the most basic essential oils. It has strong antibacterial properties. It doesn’t require a carrier oil and can be used directly on the skin. A drop of lavender can be used in a hand wash to keep illness causing bacteria away.
Lavender is also known for its relaxing properties. A little lavender in a bath or on a pillowcase can help calm a parent or child after a busy day and help send them into a deep restful sleep. Sleep is one of the best natural ways to prevent sickness.
2. Tea Tree Oil
Every family with school age children should have this oil on hand. It has strong antibacterial, antifungal, and antiseptic properties. When mixed with a carrier oil, it works on healing cuts and scrapes. It also takes away the pain of these common childhood injuries.
Tea tree oil also works as a lice repellant. A few drops in your child’s shampoo bottle will keep them from getting lice, and will kill any nits already in their hair. Never apply tea tree oil directly to the skin, eyes, or hair. It always requires a carrier oil.
Sometimes no matter how hard you try, you cannot prevent your family from getting sick. If you want to get them back on their feet as quickly as possible, peppermint oil may do the trick. Peppermint oil can help with fevers and congestion. It fights nausea. When you mix peppermint oil with lavender and apply it to the temples you can reduce the pain from headaches and take the edge off of migraines.
Lemon isn’t just for adding some zest to your food. Lemon improves happiness. Happier people are less likely to get sick. One interesting study out of Japan even found that lemon oil helped people reduce their dosages of antidepressants.
Lemon oil can also be used to purify skin, as an energy booster, and as a bug repellant.
Feeling like you can’t breathe is miserable. If you or your family develops a cough, inhaling some eucalyptus oil can open up the airways and break up the cough. A few drops in a vaporizer will keep the cough from keeping you up all night and let everyone get the sleep they need to get better. If eucalyptus is used with a carrier oil it can also make a great foot and chest rub that will help clear the sinuses.
