Black bean burger with sweet potatoes

If you're looking for a veggie burger that's nutritious, a great source of protein, and easy to prepare, look no further. Don't be intimidated by the multiple steps in this recipe, because you'll miss out on a delicious black bean burger, that gets a boost in both the flavor and texture departments from beans, sweet potatoes, and seeds. These burgers can be prepared ahead and frozen, making them an excellent choice for a quick and tasty weeknight meal. A delicious burger is always something everyone can agree on!


How It's Made


  • 1 tablespoon of
  • 1/2 cup of rolled oats
  • 1 1/2 cup of black beans, rinsed and drained
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 1/2 cup of
  • 1 cup of
  • 1 teaspoon of Cajun spices
  • 1 tablespoon of nutritional yeast
  • 2 tablespoons of virgin olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon of Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon of soy sauce
  • 1/2 tablespoon of sea salt
  • Fresh ground pepper
  • 1 1/2 cup of grated sweet potato
  • 1 small onion
  • 1/3 bunch of cilantro
  • 3 tablespoons of sunflower oil, for cooking

Burger Toppings:

  • Burger buns
  • Tomatoes
  • Boston lettuce
  • Veganaise
  • Pickles


  1. In a small bowl, mix the chia with 3 tablespoons of water. Leave to absorb, until it forms a gel. 
  2. In the bowl of a food processor, place the oats, beans, garlic, sunflower seeds, walnuts, spices, nutritional yeast, olive oil, mustard, soy sauce, salt, pepper, and chia gel. 
  3. Pulse until the mix is even and slightly sticky, but still slightly granulated, so the nuts and seeds stay crunchy. 
  4. Pour the mixture into a bowl. Chop the onion and cilantro. Add the grated sweet potato, onion, and cilantro to the bean mixture. Stir to combine. 
  5. Make the mixture into patties with your hands. Rinse with water in between each patty to keep the mix from sticking to your hands. 
  6. Cook the patties in a non-stick frying pan with a bit of sunflower oil, for a few minutes each side, until browned. 
  7. Transfer the patties to a baking sheet covered with parchment paper and bake at 350°F for 15 minutes, turning once halfway through cooking time.
  8. Garnish with your favourite burger toppings!
