The Benefits of Dry Brushing

What if I told you that – for less than $15 – you could detoxify your body, strengthen your immune system, and reduce the formation of cellulite in just 2 minutes a day? The secret? Dry skin brushing! Brushing your skin may seem strange at first glance, but it's a fantastic practice to incorporate into your daily routine to improve your overall health.

We tend to forget that the skin is an organ that helps detoxify the body, in company with the liver, the kidneys, the digestive system, and the lungs. In fact, the skin is our largest organ! It is therefore essential to pay special attention to it.

Every day, the skin regenerates and eliminates a huge quantity of toxins through perspiration. But covering our skin with creams, oils, and pharmaceutical products (which often contain many chemical elements) blocks our pores and prevents the elimination of the toxins.

Dry brushing effectively eliminates the accumulated impurities while stimulating blood circulation and rendering both the skin and the body healthier.

The Numerous Benefits of Dry Skin Brushing:

1. Stimulates the Lymphatic System

The lymphatic system is like the water in a swimming pool. If we neglect it and do not clean it regularly, the water becomes stagnant and impurities and waste accumulate in it. The same principle applies to the lymphatic system. Brushing stimulates the circulation of lymph, a yellowish liquid located under the skin, and helps it to circulate to the lymph nodes, small filtration organs that eliminate bacteria and impurities. Brushing therefore helps to improve circulation and free the body of toxins.

2. Strengthens the Immune System

The lymphatic system is one of the most important components of the immune system. When it is clogged, our defences are weakened and the risk of infection increases. Dry skin brushing strengthens the immune system and helps your body to prevent, and to fight, disease.

3. Exfoliates and Improves the Appearance of the Skin

Brushing removes dead skin and impurities from the surface of the skin, clears the pores, and stimulates the natural production of sebum, resulting in smoother, more uniform, and radiant skin.

4. Reduces the Formation of Cellulite

Regular brushing helps to reduce the formation of cellulite by stimulating circulation that helps to distribute fatty deposits evenly throughout the body.

Now, how do we do it? 

The Golden Rules of Dry Skin Brushing:

1. Choose the Right Brush

First, make sure you choose a brush with natural fibres (avoid synthetic fibres). It may be a good idea to choose a long-handled brush so you can easily reach places difficult to get at. You will find excellent brushes online and in health food stores for less than $15.

2. Brush Before You Bathe

The best time to perform this ritual is before you take a bath or shower. The morning is a particularly special moment because brushing will energize and invigorate you.

3. Always Brush Towards the Heart

Start with the bottom of your feet and make small circular movements with the brush; gradually work your way up your body. Brush your hands towards your shoulders, then upwards on the torso. It is important that you always stroke the brush in the direction of your heart. Spend time on each part of your body, with the exception of your face and nipples. Remember the armpits, groin, behind the knees and neck, which are important sites of the lymphatic system. 

4. Apply Good Pressure

Apply enough pressure to properly stimulate your lymph nodes, but gentle enough to not scratch your skin. Brushing can be uncomfortable at first, but you get used to it very quickly and it will soon be pleasurable!

5. Enjoy It

Brushing can take as little as 2 or 3 minutes. On the other hand, you can take 10 to 15 minutes for a deeper cleaning. Take the opportunity to relax and turn it into a meditative session. Rather than seeing brushing as a chore, turn it into a special time of day during which you take care of yourself and your health.
