Many vegans are well aware that the food we consume can be a powerful medicine. The same holds true for adopters of the Paleo diet and Paleo meal plans. Many modern health problems are tied to the new ways that we consume food. Obesity, diabetes, and heart disease are modern plagues caused by our diets. Most of these health issues were largely unknown to our ancestors. What is a Paleo diet? One could say, a caveman diet. The food they ate nourished them. The foods didn’t make them sick. This doesn’t just mean our hunter gatherer ancestors from thousands of years ago. Even our ancestors from two hundred years ago avoided many of the modern health problems we face because their diet was more wholesome. Here are five paleo diet basics about diet and eating we can learn from our ancestors.
1. When to Eat
The idea of eating three big meals a day is a relatively new change in the way humans eat. Our current meal schedule is mostly to accommodate industrial age working conditions. But, our ancestors, knew what science is telling us today. Several small meals throughout the day are better than three big meals. If you eat five smaller meals you have more energy, suffer fewer food cravings, and consume fewer calories.
2. Eat Fresh Whole Foods
Our ancestors didn’t have frozen pizzas on the menu. The diet of our ancestors was not synthetic. They ate whole foods, that weren’t processed, and sometimes were not even cooked. A diet of raw fruits, vegetables, and nuts will help anyone lose weight and reduce the risks of heart disease, obesity, and diabetes. It also tastes much better.
3. Eat Slowly
In our fast paced world we often cram down our food as quickly as possible so we can get on with our day. Our ancestors didn’t have fast food. It took time to prepare the meals and the eating was done slowly. Food was a vital substance, not an after thought. Modern science has shown that the slower you eat the fewer calories you consume at a meal. Maybe if we ate more fresh, whole foods, we wouldn’t want to rush through a meal.
4. Avoid Carbs
Our ancestors did not eat a lot of bread or other carbohydrates. Heavily processed grains are a recent addition to the human diet. It is also one that is responsible for a host of health problems. Our bodies are not genetically programmed to consume and process the huge amounts of carbohydrates that make up the modern diet. Too many carbohydrates leads to blood sugar issues, including diabetes. It also leads to obesity.
