10 things you didn't know about organic food
Want to eat more organic foods for environmental or health reasons? It’s nothing new, but it is in the news more and more: the way we eat has very real impacts on the environment. Here are the answers to all your most pressing questions, as well as a few myths worth debunking.
1. Organic goes beyond your fruit and veg
There are organic options for everything, from grains like rice, wheat and quinoa, to pantry essentials like sugar, olive oil, cacao, tea and coffee. Our products are the perfect example: all the nuts, seeds and dried fruit in our snacks are 100% certified organic.
2. It’s easy to tell if you’re buying organic
All organic foods have a very visible identification on the package. If there’s no logo, you’re not buying something that’s organic. Pretty simple, huh?
3. To each their own priorities
Ever heard of the Clean Fifteen and Dirty Dozen? The Environmental Working Group has classified the 12 fruits and vegetables with the most pesticide residue, and the 15 with the least. If you have to prioritize when you’re starting out, this is the tool you need to make the best choices.
4. You can’t wash pesticides off
Pesticides and other chemicals used in conventional agriculture aren’t just on the skin of your fruits and vegetables - they’re also in the flesh and that is something you can’t rinse off.
5. Buying organic food means taking care of the environment
Synthetic pesticides used in conventional agriculture end up polluting the atmosphere, soils and bodies of water. They contribute to the acidification of soils and the pollution of underground water systems, which then flow into lakes and rivers. Choosing organic foods, grown without all these toxic products, means avoiding a whole lot of stress to the environment.
6. You know what you get when you buy organic
You’ll find no GMOs, sulfites, artificial colors and flavors or preservatives in organic foods. That’s because organic food is highly regulated, and government agencies keep a close check to ensure production and quality standards are met.
7. Organic stretches beyond the kitchen
Organic crops aren’t limited to food items. You can now find clothing, towels, table linens and bed sheets made with organic cotton. 8. Organic food isn’t just for hippies
In Canada, organic is among the fastest-growing agricultural sectors. More and more brands are starting to offer organic options, and it’s no wonder: the market itself is booming! If organic is on all the menus in 2018, we’re proud to have used 100% organic ingredients since we started out 12 years ago.
9. Organic is an investment
There is a difference in the price of conventionally-grown foods compared to organic food. That’s due to a lot of factors, including the fact that organic farming uses more resource- and labor-intensive methods, as well as the cost of the certification itself. Organic farmers benefit from fewer economies of scale as well. But that doesn’t mean you can’t have a healthy, (mostly) organic diet on a budget! Lots of initiatives, from organic baskets to bulk-buying groups, make organic foods accessible and affordable.
10. Conventional agriculture isn’t sustainable on the long-term
Over time, pests develop a tolerance to synthetic pesticides. That means farms have to use stronger (and more toxic) products, leading to soil depletion.
Regardless, just because your shopping cart isn’t 100% organic or that you opt for conventional options, it doesn’t mean that you have to neglect fresh unprocessed foods!
